green turtles
Green turtles are one of the largest sea turtles and a herbivores. They really matter and have impact on sea life because of food that they consume. These turtles feed on seagrasses and algae. Seagrass is quickly digested and it becomes recycled nutrients to many animals and plants there. Seagrass also works as nurseries for fish which are needed in many fisheries and people eat them. Green turtles do lot of good things but unfortunately they are classified as endangered species. They have to face many threats and its not that easy for them to live peacefully. They are threatened by fishing gear, they are hunted and their eggs are harvested. These turtles are illegal trade and hundreds of them are harvested every year especially in part of Asia. In West Africa they are killed for use in medicine and ceremonies. Turtle hazard is known as bycatch and its a serious problem. Green turtles also are getting caught in nets and hooks underwater by accident and many of them are simply drowning. They need to breathe and sometimes they dont reach the surface in time. Also these turtles are losing their habitat as a result of human actions. They are dependent on beaches for nesting and human activities are destroying their nesting beaches all over the world. Vehicles on beaches and coastal development are serious threats for green turtles. WWF is trying to reduce turtle harvesting and they are working to stop illegal trades. They control it through traffic by trade monitoring network. They are also monitoring many turtle nests to make sure that sea turtles have safe place to nest and to migrate peacefully.
